The History of Death Legion told through the eyes of Boomer MkVenner
"About eight years ago I started playing a game, the then called Project Entropia, since renamed to Entropia Universe. I started playing it because it was free, I had no job at the time, so it was my only real choice, little did I know how big a choice that would actually turn out to be.
In PE, you don’t make money the same way you would in your normal MMO, afterall, normal MMO’s you pay for, they just want to keep you happy. In PE you have to buy money in game with real money, otherwise you can’t really do anything. So there I was, three or four days in, having done nothing more than walk around and chat to people, I was on the verge of quitting, I didn’t need some 3d Graphical chat simulator. But then I met a man called Starks.
Starks was the leader of a small, but tightly knit clan called Methods of Mayhem, the idea was they hunted together, sold the loot, put the money from that back into hunting, and so on. But they were in need of someone to sell said loot, as everyone else were more interested in hunting and PVP. Truth be told all I wanted to do was kill shit too, but this was an opening for me to make some money, and some friends within the game, so I took it.
Pretty soon I was well set-up, they’d hunt, bring me the loot, and I’d sell it off, and boy was I good at it. I don’t know why, I’d had no experience at it, but I guess it just came naturally to me, I could make people buy stuff for 50-200% what it was worth. We had a good thing going on, they’d hunt shit, get the loot, I’d sell it for profit, give them back the proceeds, and they’d use that to hunt more stuff, technically this was communism, but fuck it, it worked. Along the road they’d give me stuff to keep, a decent bit of armour here, a decent weapon there, so from time to time I’d take time off from trading and go hunting with them.
Back then, “them” was Starks, the leader, a good guy, fair and honest, quite charismatic too. Dunbiel, Stark’s right hand man, 620, Skizzy and Speaker, the guys I probably grew closest too, a proper laugh, and easy to get along with, Mercenary X, the general “clown” of the outfit, he always had a joke to crack, some funny comment on a situation to make. There were 006 aka “The Artist” (now known better as Reefer), Nirvana and Swifter also, a group of somewhat immature guys, but fun none-the-less, and a laugh to be around their group chemistry infectious.
Now MoM (Methods of Mayhem) grew quite friendly with another clan, the Swedish Brotherhood, spending time with them on ventrilo, hunting with them, PKing with them, collaborating resources and such. To the point where, after Starks disappeared for a while, the members of MoM started to disperse a little, each of us spending less time in game as a group, to the point where MoM just didn’t work anymore. Some of us left for the Swedish Brotherhood, Speaker, 620, Merc X, Skizzy and I. They were more active and gave us more to do, instead of coming online and wondering if there was anyone else around to do anything with. Dunbiel, 006, Swifter and Nirvana stayed, determined to ride it out and await the return of Starks.
Time went by, and eventually I left PE because of real life responsibilities, I’d left school, had to get a job, had a car to pay for, a girlfriend to waste money on. But one day I found myself sitting in front of my computer, with its brand-new broadband connection, wondering what had happened to Speaker, 620, Skizzy, Dunbiel and the others...
So I downloaded Project Entropia once again, loaded up the familiar interface and started to go from colony to colony to see if I could track anyone down. I’d already heard from somewhere, I can’t remember where, possibly MSN, a forum maybe, that some of the remnants of MoM had joined up with a few others guys to form a new clan, a name that had been passed around here and there was Farha. Completely by coincidence I bumped into this Farha, and we got talking, and before I knew it he had re-introduced me to a lot of the old clan, 620, Speaker, Merc X, 006, but some had just dissipated, Skizzy, Dunbiel, but there were a lot of new faces, The Duke, Raine, LeFae and FeVeR. Before I knew it I had been inducted into a new clan, a clan that would become much more than MoM ever was, more than just a clan, but a brotherhood, an army, a Legion.
This clan, was Death Legion.
I had reappeared in PE, during a long conflict between the newly founded Death Legion, still cutting their teeth, and a much more established clan, cK, the Coat Killers. And this conflict would lay down the very basis of what DL would become. In game, DL and cK would hate each other, kill each other without a moment’s notice, with no need for any aggression, they were the enemy, which was all that was needed. But outside of the game, we got along...kind of.
Eventually Death Legion became bored of the boundaries PE put upon them, we looked for a new game, I found Neocron, and became just as addicted to this as I had been to PE, but it wasn’t for the rest of the guys, because of this I became slightly detached, starting a new cycle, similar to the one I had travelled in PE, within a new game, but I still kept in touch with the guys.
Then a new game came into our interest, Face of Mankind. When FoM went into Open Beta we joined en-mass, at first it was just myself, Speaker, 620 and Merc X. We would spend our days as a street gang in the most populous area, Brooklyn, killing people for loot in the back alleys. “Go for the guys with helmets, they have the best shit” was the lesson I’d learnt here. We’d become a rabble, a street gang, nothing more than thugs, but we were having fun, so we thought, “fuck the consequences, this is a laugh” and carried on.
But then it changed. People in FoM started to situate themselves, people found themselves in positions of power, it became more than just mindless running around and “testing” a game, this was a game, Beta or not. Factions started to set out their hierarchy, power-plays erupted between groups and individuals, some carving out more of a niche than others.
To be honest, I can’t remember how the transition took place, but at some point Death Legion went from more than just 5 guys “shanking” people in a back alley, to a bona-fide Mercenary Clan. We set up our home in the faction Mercenaries of the Blood, we would move around from time to time, but this would be our true home.
So at the start there was Sylvia running MotB with the aid of MoH, her upper Echelon of Mercs. The then called FeVeR recruited a few new names, some of who would turn out to be a very wise investment, Stevenn T Forceno and Jord. We were given a chance, to make a reputation for ourselves, but, from my point of view, some people had it in for us from the start. I was given the rank 5 position as a sort of ambassador between MotB HC and Death Legion, it was working well but something happened and we got booted out. Someone apparently witnessed an, until now minor member of DL, gank people in Brooklyn, so we were cast out of the “recognised” mercenary outfits. I remember my words to Sylvia then, a re-quote of Trotsky, “Watch that one”, I had bad feeling about him.
Now we a decided to not bother with the MotB higher command, we had entered a war with the FDC, through impartial animosity, this made the then MotB HC unhappy, so they decided to fight us themselves. When this happened, we called an end to the war with FDC, and turned our attention to the, as far we were concerned, traitorous MotB command.
So Law Destroyer was eventually installed as the MotB leader, the Rank 7. We thought he would uphold the direction we thought MotB should be driven in, but he didn’t. Eventually, once again, we decided to rise up. This time, we were joined by many other clans within the MotB, ES, WAB, AoD. This time all of the clans, that epitomised what the mercs are, where with us. It was a long struggle, FDC, LED and a few other sided with the existing MotB HC because they were easy to control, but CMG and some other sided with us because they could see it’d work to their interest in the long term.
Eventually we won, Junriah was installed as the new, impartial MotB leader."
